Meet the Astronomer at the Dyer Observatory, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Thurs Oct 24, 7 pm CT. What is the Most Intriguing Evidence that Suggests Life Beyond Earth Might Exist? No, it's not tiny, bacteria-shaped structures in Martian meteorites. No, it's not methane gas in the atmosphere of Mars. No, it's not the material seen in the geysers erupting from the subsurface oceans of Saturn's moon Enceladus. Yes, it's something else entirely. In this fascinating talk, Vanderbilt Professor of Astronomy Emeritus Dr. David Weintraub discusses why the little-known secrets found in the Murchison, Orguiel and Allende meteorites, and in samples from asteroid Bennu might be the best evidence we have to suggest life might be abundant in the universe. See and Hold Parts of Our Solar System It's not every day that one gets their hands on a 4.5-billion-year-old meteorite. In addition to learning about the various kinds of space rocks, attendees will also have the opportunity to see and even hold examples of these relics! Following the talk (weather permitting), we will end the night with a grand view of Saturn and its moons through Dyer's historic Seyfert Telescope! Doors open at 6 p.m., and early birds may even have a chance to do a bit of telescope viewing before the talk. The lecture will be held on Dyer's tented back patio, so it is recommended attendees dress in layers for comfort during the lecture and while in the unheated telescope dome. About the Speaker David A. Weintraub is Professor of Astronomy Emeritus and Director of the Communication of Science and Technology Program Emeritus at Vanderbilt University and a Fellow of the American Astronomical Society. His research discoveries include identifying the first known, nearby, young star cluster, the TW Hya Association, and pioneering the use of infrared speckle interferometry, infrared molecular hydrogen imaging, and submillimeter continuum imaging to identify material in the circumstellar disks of young stars. He is the 2015 winner of the Klopsteg Award from the American Association of Physics Teachers, which recognizes the outstanding communication of the excitement of contemporary physics to the general public, and the author of The Sky is for Everyone: Women Astronomers in Their Own Words (2022, Princeton University Press), Life on Mars: What to Know Before We Go (2018, Princeton University Press), Religions and Extraterrestrial Life: How Will We Deal With It? If ICE agents show up at your door. 1. You do not have to open the door. If you do, stay calm - you have rights. 2. Ask what they are there for (and ask for an interpreter if you need one) 3. If they ask to enter, ask if they have a warrant signed by a judge, and if so, ask to see it through a window or slipped under the door. 4. If they do not have a warrant signed by a judge you may refuse to let them in. Ask them to leave any information at your door. 5. If they force their way in, do not resist. Tell everyone in the residence to remain silent. 6. If you are arrested, you have the right to remain silent. Do not sign anything until you speak to a lawyer. Aclu.org

More specifics at Aclu.org. You have the right to tell people their legal rights, even when the person has broken or is breaking a law. They still have legal rights. Which can include due prices and protections against unreasonable search and seizure. Telling people their rights can include offering practical advice for interacting with law enforcement or suggesting specific words they can say to involve their rights or understand they're under arrest.

Gomez issued the following statement in response to ABC’s decision to capitulate to government pressure that violates the First Amendment and threatens free expression: “We cannot allow an inexcusable act of political violence to be twisted into a justification for government censorship and control. First, an ABC reporter was told that his coverage amounted to hate speech and that he should be prosecuted simply for doing his job. Then, the FCC threatened to go after this same network, seizing on a late-night comedian’s inopportune joke as a pretext to punish speech it disliked. That led to a shameful show of cowardly corporate capitulation by ABC that has put the foundation of the First Amendment in danger. “This FCC does not have the authority, the ability, or the constitutional right to police content or punish broadcasters for speech the government dislikes. If it were to take the unprecedented step of trying to revoke broadcast licenses, which are held by local stations rather than national networks, it would run headlong into the First Amendment and fail in court on both the facts and the law. But even the threat to revoke a license is no small matter. It poses an existential risk to a broadcaster, which by definition cannot exist without its license. 1. In the immediate aftermath, news outlets will get it wrong. 2. Don't trust anonymous sources. 3. Don't trust stories that cite another news outlet as the source of the information. 4. There's almost never a second shooter. 5. Pay attention to the language the media uses. - "We are getting reports"... could mean anything. - "We are seeking confirmation"... means they don't haveit. - "[News outlet] has learned"... means it has a scoop or is going out on a limb. 6. Look for news outlets close to the incident. 7. Compare multiple sources. 8. Big news brings out the fakers. And photoshoppers. 9. Beware reflexive retweeting. Some of this is on you.

This is a flyer promoting a survey from the CDC about H5 bird flu. Since March 2024, there have been 70 human cases of avian influenza in the U.S., mostly linked to commercial poultry or dairy cattle, but some have occurred in people with backyard flocks. CDC and state/local health departments will use the survey results to strengthen prevention activities and educational materials. State-specific results will be shared with state/local health departments. The survey takes 10–15 minutes, is completely anonymous, and is open to participants aged 18 or older who have at least one bird (chicken, goose, duck, or other poultry).
