I think you are conflating "auction" with "lottery."
In a lottery, the winner is chosen at random. Buying more tickets increases your chance of winning. A "standard auction*" goes by bidders increasing their bids until no one wants to challenge the keader.

My headcannon is that while Witches and Demons understand the birds and the bees just fine, they just assume EVERYTHING about humans is weird and incomprehensible. Like how the young witches were terrified of a human alarm clock going off.
