Studying maths at the university of my house, and occasionally writing about it at https://ergodicbees.wordpress.com/
Shout out to "Geometry: A Very Short Introduction" by Maciej Dunajski. Honestly I didn't vibe with the subject but this little book kept me motivated and I liked some of its explanations over the "proper" text books I had (esp for spherical triangles).

My messy affair with geometry has ended. As an attempt at closure (heh!) I wrote a little something about isometries

I'm sure I'll go back to geometry one day, but next up I'm super ready to revisit analysis (with extra variables this time!)

Isometries of the plane
I’ve just come to the end of a messy affair with some geometry books. Note that I didn’t say I’ve wrapped up a reading course on geometry. As it turns out I didn’t get on so…

Trying to understand cyclic vector spaces a bit better by writing out a detailed proof of the exercise: if f is a linear map on V, show V is f-cyclic if and only if the minimal and characteristic polynomials of f are equal

Cyclic vector spaces
I feel like I’m wading into ever deeper waters with linear algebra, but I can just about still touch the bottom. Although I don’t have a strong intuition for algebra some of the things …

Slowly making my way through a second course in linear algebra. Got a bit hung up on a theorem about vector space decomposition, so decided to write something to consolidate the reading around I had to do. Think I got there in the end

Vector space decomposition
I have to admit things have slowed down a bit recently, mainly because I was away for a month so there was little opportunity to do any maths (although I did go to the amazing maths and science boo…

Very much enjoyed reading this essay by @wtgowers.bsky.social about the "two cultures" of mathematics: problem solvers and theory builders. I didn't particularly enjoy my reading course on graph theory and combinatorics but it was a good problem-solving workout

A quick wrap-up of my short reading course on #combinatorics, and some (very) simple number theoretic applications. I was expecting this course to be more painful than it was! #MathSky

Combinatorics
Towards the end of my master’s degree I got really interested in doing a PhD. My dissertation had gone well and I was keen to follow it up with research. I was also very lucky to have Stefano…

Matchings and Hall’s Theorem
A class of students have just finished a training course and the next step is for them to start work placements. As the course administrator we want to assign each student a placement they’ll…

Back at it after Christmas and the summer holidays. Graph theory is a totally new subject for me, so I decided to write down a few thoughts

Thoughts on graph theory, and a bit about polyhedra
After a bit of a break for Christmas and the summer holidays my mathematical journey is back on track. So far I’ve only revisited subjects I remember studying at university, which means I&#82…

Möbius Transformations
I have to admit I’ve slowed down a lot over the last couple of weeks. There’s been lots to do in the run up to Christmas, as well as the usual work and other chores, so I decided to wra…

I did a bit of writing about a complex analysis problem I got stuck on. I have a terrible habit of jumping to conclusions about how to solve things and I wasted a lot of time, but got there in the end :) #MathSky

An alternative route to the Maximum Modulus Theorem
I spent way too long stuck on a problem in Stewart and Tall’s Complex Analysis recently. Never mind the obvious typos in the question (I’ve never come across a maths book with so many t…

Just as I was getting started this afternoon. Perhaps I'll just make this account photos of cats sitting on maths books

My blog is about maths I've been studying and enjoying. Writing about it helps me learn and remember stuff. My last post was about contracting maps and fixed points
