Just finished "Ripeness", the latest by Sarah Moss. It's a novel about many things; the depictions of female friendship in late middle-age will stay with me in particular.

The National Library of Ireland recently digitised this English-Irish spelling-book, used in schools in 1823. Little fingers tracing the beautiful Irish script. The famine, another blow to the native language, still two decades away. Worth a look, if it's your thing catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls0...
