Demand near 76,000 megawatts in ERCOT today with over 16,000 megawatts-worth of gas & coal plants offline. About 94% of those thermal outages are unplanned.

No energy emergencies or scarcity as solar & wind are meeting more than 50% of peak demand.

ERCOT is projecting an all-time May peak demand record Tuesday, of nearly 80 gigawatts. (Prev record = 77GW). With more than 20 gigawatts of gas offline, we could be looking at an energy emergency... but we have 30 GW of solar & 11 GW of batteries, plenty of extra power. ☀️🔋

Not Just Local: How Regional Solar Penetration Drives ‘Ducky’ Wholesale Power Prices – Evidence from Finland
The growing share of solar has brought ducky power price shapes where wholesale prices are lower and even negative especially during spring afternoons when the demand is low and solar generation is…

"That a renewables-heavy grid might struggle with maintaining reliability thanks to low inertia is no surprise," writes @zeitlin.bsky.social.

Here's what this week's blackout in Spain and Portugal has to do with a concept you may remember from physics class ⬇️

Spinning turbines have it, but solar panels don’t.

Over half of U.S. states now get more power from breeze-blown turbines and sun-soaked photovoltaic panels than they do from polluting, planet-warming coal, according to a new report from think tank @ember-energy.org
Chart: These states get more power from clean energy than coal
Wind and solar beats out the polluting fossil fuel in 28 states, from Arizona to Washington, bringing cheaper, cleaner electricity to communities.

European average day-ahead power prices continue to be significantly higher (usually more than twice) than the prices in US ISOs. This is bad news for competitiveness and slightly good news for energy transition.

Uh oh. Don't tell the "EV sales have stalled" folks, but August saw a set of new records in the US:
-Most plug-in vehicles sold (145k)
-Most battery electric vehicles sold (121k)
-Highest battery electric (8.6%) and plug-in vehicle sales shares (10.2%)
