How do you usually react when you see your kiddo sad like that?

My 11yo son just sat down with me before going to sleep and talked about sadness for thirty minutes. I am kinda envious that he has the freedom and willingness to share with me.

It's ok that my daughter spontaneously woke up at midnight to find a gift from the tooth fairy. But why wake ME up just to show it to me?
