Clearly, they needed to build a 3.5 storey apartment building with 9.5 units.

Yes, you're right. I think I may have read their recommendation from the 2020 report regarding modal discounts.
January 3, 2026 at 4:20 AM
Infrastructure Victoria actually proposes modal and off-peak discounts for travellers who use buses, to encourage their use.

This is equivalent to arguing that stopping train services overnight is good because you get to enjoy accommodation away from home.

Here in Victoria, public transport is free on Christmas Day, though it is running to a Saturday timetable.

There is the Parking Space Levy which targets a proxy of congestion (car spaces used in the CBD and several dense areas in Sydney).

Is Tallawong a low density suburb outside of the apartment blocks shown? Frequent feeder buses could do a lot to solve reduce the reliance on Park and Ride.

I saw the article on the author’s sub stack a week ago. I wonder if he has accounted for a change in travel patterns to coincide with the off-peak, which is currently not well served by public transport?

I’m curious how short distance trips will defined in our zonal system. Will they be the same for short trips made in Zone 1 or Zone 2?

I like the diagrams in that map showing where tunnel boring, cut and cover, or covered elevated rail would go.
December 8, 2025 at 11:55 PM
Was the station proposed at the Rosemont Hospital in an area not as busy as other parts of Rosemont?
December 8, 2025 at 11:03 PM
REM is more a light metro than a light rail tram.
December 8, 2025 at 5:38 PM
I wonder if that’s why Melbourne still has relatively poor buses and rail frequencies compared to Sydney. Melbourne is located on a flat plain (excepting Port Phillip Bay), and so it is easy for car-dependent sprawl to be built.
December 8, 2025 at 11:13 AM
8 years pass by too quickly. I find it sad that Melbourne doesn’t seem to have a strong pipeline of public transport projects now that the Metro Tunnel is done. Airport Rail and SRL are at least half a decade away, whilst Sydney has three metro lines opening in the same timeframe.

I think they should have diverted some of the City Loop Services on the Sunbury/ Pakenham and Cranbourne line instead of or alongside running new services. Whilst I was waiting at Malvern station, I saw three City Loop services pass by fairly empty before getting on a Sunbury bound service.

Thanks for posting the ride down. Looking forward to checking out the interchange in person on Sunday!

Citizens are excited when new infrastructure opens that will tangibly improve their lives? The horror.
November 24, 2025 at 8:21 AM
I wonder if REM de l'Est would not have been cancelled had it been announced after the opening of the first leg of the REM.
November 24, 2025 at 8:19 AM
The most amazing part of the REM for me was the model of delivery. Having one party design, construct, and operate the infrastructure, kept costs low.
November 24, 2025 at 8:17 AM
Why do you think the net leadership favourability is not converting to party support?
November 21, 2025 at 11:45 AM
Much better than where the station and railway has been trenched. With elevated railways, you make it easier for people to cross underneath, and create new open space.
November 21, 2025 at 9:21 AM
Great to engage with 3AW. However, I think you could’ve countered Tom’s arguments by saying that more housing density would automatically free up housing stock of different types so that people with certain needs can buy a house in an area they want to live in.
November 16, 2025 at 11:05 PM
Thanks. Also, do you know if the free weekend public transport for the summer will also start from 10am?
November 16, 2025 at 12:26 AM
Do you know if the first train will be 10 am then given the weekend schedule?

The funny thing is that renewables are the neoliberal solution to climate change. Most of the new renewable projects are private investments that sell to the National Energy Market. Pricing is used to match energy demand with supply.
