Scholar of the early modern now in south Texas. My book, English National Identity and the Image of the Dutch: From the Armada to the Glorious Revolution, came out with Palgrave early in 2024. Posts represent my personal opinion, not my employer’s.
It’s so nice in #portland! Leaves are changing. Ran into a bunch of old friends at the conference registration. Looking forward to things getting started tomorrow.

Today is the feast day of St Jerome. I used to have a copy of this Durer print above my desk. I love the quiet stillness of his study and the light streaming in through the windows.

I found a picture to include (attached here) of a sculpture of Antigone by William Henry Reinhart. I don’t know anything about that artist or about Antigone in late 19th C America. Where can I learn more - I’m intrigued!

It was fun to bump into this painting at the National Gallery yesterday. It felt so familiar. Where have I seen it before?

Could it be a pedal of the sort used in old sewing machines? A mechanism that would allow the foot to contribute to industry?

I used that app probably 15 or 20 times a day. If I ever go back to it, I’ll have to see if this option - to give a location my own label- might make it palatable:

When the idea that Google Maps would rename the Gulf first came up, I discovered on here that @mapquest.com still exists. And for now, Apple maps hasn’t changed the Gulf’s name. So, I think I’ll try to unlearn my preference for Google Maps. :(

Just wondering how you would respond to this additional information? Care to revise your explanation of what you would have done?

I love the idea of being THE Academic Jester of BlueSky. Or being a combo of Foucault and Dad Jokes.

I’m just happy to have found a bunch of my old Bird App friends over here. Pouring one out for the handful who just quit social media altogether when the other place collapsed.

Bluesky now has over 10 million users, and I was #799,442!
