Okay one last good review and then I'm finished
I don’t “get” a lot of popular stuff. Sitcoms. Sports. Taylor Swift. But I do get Santal 33. And this is coming from a certified Pickle Hater™. It’s a lofty, clean, lumbery scent. I can't catch an ounce of pickle. There’s something about the wood that makes me think particle board or plywood; a blond, manufactured wood-pulp product, at least a dozen processing steps removed from having roots or leaves. The American cheese of timber. But with the longevity of a brick. You can hate Santy33 all you want but, just like TSwift, you can’t deny their stamina. And if smelling like a bale of fresh hamster bedding is basic, then basic I shall proudly be. Mental Snapshot: A model home. A boxy 2BR2BA in a tract development named something like “Sunnyglen” or “Bridgewood.” The stucco is painted something named like “Gentle Egg” and the carpet “Oat Angel.” (They’re the same colour). It’s warm, but empty. Hollow, but home. You move into unit number #33.

Le Labo Santal 33 – Eau de Existential Crisis If you've ever wondered what it feels like to be punched in the face by a cowboy in a Brooklyn art gallery, congratulations—you've just smelled Santal 33. The opening? Oh, it's bitter. Harsh. Like someone brewed black tea with leather boots and sprinkled in bitter tears. Masculine? Absolutely. But not the suave, James Bond type—more like your emotionally unavailable ex who smokes unfiltered cigarettes and talks about Nietzsche ad nauseam. This scent doesn’t whisper on the skin. It yells. It’s the olfactory equivalent of someone slamming a philosophy book on a table and demanding you feel something. There's a dry, smoky woodiness that suggests you’ve been trapped in an artisanal lumberyard with a Marlboro Man cosplayer. And yet, despite being punched squarely in the nasal passages, some people like this. Like a toxic relationship with a cologne-soaked lumberjack. Two and a half stars. Would not recommend. I can stop smelling it, but the assault on my sinuses does not end.

Unfortunately, my story with Santal 33 does not end there. I started my fall term of college in LA, where I had to schlep myself and my books 2 miles each day in 105º heat. I was excited for a fresh start in a new town. I made it safely onto the school's campus, and while searching for my classroom, something stopped me dead in my tracks: pickle juice. Hot, leathery pickle juice wafted across the school's lawn, eviscerating my own scent bubble of Commodity's Gold. I quickly became disoriented and arrived at my 1st class 15 minutes late. I headed to my next lecture, only to be olfactively assaulted once again by the putrid stench of vinegar-soaked suede. Feeling discouraged and mocked by God, a tear rolled down my cheek, and I resolved to walk back another mile in now 110º heat to my dorm. I dropped out of the school a month later. Perhaps by divine intervention, I have not had the dismay of smelling this fragrance in public since then. I pray that it stays like this.

I knew a guy who worked in a morgue, and when he was new to the job his coworkers encouraged him to prank the boss by getting on a slab in one of the drawers to jumpscare him when he pulled him out. So he strips off, lies on the slab, and the coworkers cover him up, slide the slab away and close the door. Thing is, inside the storage there are no walls between the slabs, so he's lying there in the dark with all the corpses becoming increasingly anxious. After about 5 minutes the corpse next to him says "cold in here isn't it?", and he tried to sit up so fast he nearly knocked himself out. It was his boss on the slab next to him. That's fucked up lmao.
