#OnThisDay 1789 George Washington was inaugurated as the First President of the USA.

Washington had served as an officer in Virginia’s colonial militia in the Seven Years War (known in America as the French & Indian War), fighting against Britain’s enemies with some distinction.

#OnThisDay in 1813, Russian Field Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov died at Brunzlau, Silesia.

Kutuzov had commanded Russian forces during Napoleon’s invasion of Russia in 1812. And although criticised by some for his lack of aggression, his patient strategy helped to ensure a catastrophic French defeat.

#OnThisDay in 1796, Napoleon’s Army of Italy won victory over Piedmontese forces at the Battle of Mondovì.

Defeat effectively knocked the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia out of the First Coalition, as its king, Victor Amadeus III, signed an armistice the following week.

Martha Washington was America’s first ‘First Lady’, providing guidance and support to her husband throughout the founding of the United States, right up to his death in 1799. George Washington was buried at their family estate in Mount Vernon, Virginia, where Martha remained after his death. (1/3)

#OnThisDay in 1812 the Spanish city of Badajoz was stormed by the British under Wellington’s command. They captured the French-held city at the cost of 4,800 casualties. Many British soldiers then went on a rampage, looting and murdering around 250 Spanish civilians before discipline was restored.

#OnThisDay in 1841 William Henry Harrison died after serving just 30 days in office, making it the shortest US presidency in history. Harrison was also the last US president to be born a British subject, gave the longest inaugural address in history and was the first president to die in office.
