Hi, Infectious disease epidemiologist here 👋
The ONLY way to prevent measles is with the measles vaccine.

• Vit A DOES NOT prevent measles.
• Vit A DOES NOT prevent long-term complications like hearing loss or subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, which measles can cause.

Please vaccinate yourself and your kids. This disease is terrible and it’s completely preventable.

Vaccination eliminated measles from the U.S. 25 years ago. But it can still spread in pockets where vaccination rates are low, like the west Texas county with a current outbreak. Here's how fast.
As the Texas outbreak grows, how contagious is measles, really?

In 2022, AK had the highest rate of new TB cases in the entire US, at 13.1 per 100k population – almost double the next highest figure, Hawaii’s 7 per 100k & nearly 3x higher than Cali, who is third at 4.7 per 100k. In some rural areas, however, the incidence rate can be as high as 135 per 100k.

What happens when you cancel the meeting? Does this mean they won’t select the next strain for the vaccine for this coming fall? Anyone work at Sanofi Aventis have any ideas?! #vaccinessavelives

Lots of us in public health right now are dealing with canceled CDC meetings. #publichealthmatters
Hopefully all recommended vaccines continue to be available in U.S. I cannot stress enough the importance of finding a pediatrician or primary care doc who believes in science & who you trust with your health to provide guidance on vaccines for you & your children.

Been in a funk all day— had a dream last night that @petebuttigieg.bsky.social told me to put my resume in the trash can. I’ve never met him. I’m sure he’d never say that to anyone. I unpacked that dream as the stress of CDC grant cuts and looming unemployment. But, why was the messenger Pete? 😂

To all my friends who lost their jobs today, big hugs. I’m thinking about doing a get together to talk about resume writing and future career paths. If you’re interested, let me know. When a door closes, another opens. Let’s build community.

Federal cuts to research grants could be ‘devastating’ for Missouri schools
The proposed cap on grants is part of a raft of sweeping federal cost-cutting measures put in place by the Trump administration.

The discovery of the D1.1 bird flu strain's spread in cows also upends previous theories floated by U.S. health and agriculture officials that the spillover of the virus into cows from wild birds was a rare, one-off event.

D1.1 symptoms are severe, linked to a human fatal case in Louisiana (2024)
Cows infected by lethal bird flu strain never before seen in the animal showing respiratory symptoms, Nevada says
The strain, called D1.1, was behind a human death from bird flu last year.

Sources tell me CDC's response to the bird flu pandemic has been severely hobbled by the chaos of the past two weeks.
