tumblr post by longlostcentury: just checking in to say that if the AFD and CDU (basically the republicans of germany) do get a majority of seats in the parliament today, dont stop protesting, continue to call people out on their bullshit, fight for peoples rights, get your studies done, eat a good snack, listen to good music, continue watching funny videos of your faves, rewatch your favourite cartoons. it is extremely hard to stay positive during these times and you dont always have to. be pissed, be livid, because you have every right to be. but the last thing we should do right now is give up. everybody who voted for those people: let's see how far this is going to get you.

post: Elon Musk, suspect motives aside, isn't actually wrong that modern Germans shouldn't feel guilt about Nazi Germany or the Holocaust. They had nothing to do with it. They should understand it, and regard it as a dark period in their history, and work to ensure it never happens again. But why guilt? me: 1. guilt equals personal inherited responsibility. most of us are alive because others died while our families stood by. it doesn't get more personal than that. 2. only nazis use the term guilt here, and it's to sugarcoat that what they really mean is responsibility. it's political gaslighting. response: I do not believe one can "inherit responsibility" for the actions of one's ancestors. That's kind of an insane concept and one people only apply selectively. Nobody calls for native American tribes to be responsible for the other tribes they killed off hundreds of years ago, for example. me: First of all, this is recent history which still affects us today. My grandparents remember the war. I don't know how you can seriously compare what privileged white Germans did to marginalised groups less than 100 years ago to Native Americans pre colonisation. Secondly, if a known fascist tells me not to feel guilty for the Holocaust my first thought isn't to question myself but to wonder why he might be saying this. This is a political agenda and it has nothing to do with guilt and everything with rolling back anti fascist laws internationally. response: Ahh, so you don't understand that making a comparison in a specific context to make a specific point isn't saying that two things are identical in all respects. Thanks for letting me know you're either dumb or intellectually dishonest. Speeds this up for me.

we get a lot of "the silmarillion reads like the bible" but I'm pretty sure for a first time read the bible is much easier because it has so much downtime where you don't really have to pay too much attention to how many people put their tent in which cardinal direction whereas Tolkien bombards you with information every other sentence and don't you dare not keep track because you'll suffer the consequences ten pages later when you don't remember whose cousin twice removed elfondingiel is
