💡 The EU should explore alternative ownership models for tech companies that are democratic by design, and clearly define their purpose and mission while embedding the founding values of the EU.

📌 Such companies have become services of public interest: they control democratic discourse online and provide essential infrastructure upon which democratic institutions and all other societal actors depend.

📲 Big Tech companies can determine whether, and how, they comply with laws enacted by democratically elected officials. They can even decide what information citizens do (or do not) have access to. 🧵

Increased funding under the next MFF and stronger legal support for civil society in case of targeted attacks are mentioned. EPD also welcomes the announcement of a Stakeholders’ Platform within the Centre for Democratic Resilience.

Enlargement countries are integrated throughout the Shield initiative, including opportunities for mutual learning within the Centre for Democratic Resilience.

The Shield proposes that defence spending should also be used to boost democratic resilience.
