For a little sweetness in your feed: getting ready for the school dance.

Got to see the SS United States as it was towed past Boca Raton today on its way to be sunk off the coast near Destin. Like watching a ghost go by.

Had a great time talking about Tampa’s African American Labor History for students at HCC today. Always honored to be asked to Black History Month events.

Here’s a scene from my ivory tower upbringing that popped up the other day. Maybe we should make this a thing.

Of course, the talk will include this great Ralph Ellison quote @drderrickewhite.bsky.social pointed me to:

Doing a Black History Month talk tomorrow night. Talking about Black Floridians. Went through some notes from when I taught History of Black Florida and found this gem from the first day, explaining why I was offering this course.

(Can’t remember what kind of mood I was in when I made this.)

Very excited to announce that my book Tampa Bay: The Story of an Estuary and Its People has been awarded the Silver Medal in Florida non-fiction by the Florida Book Awards!

My son has decided he wants to learn to open water swim, so I take him down to the beach a few mornings. Such a burden!

From OSHA’s own website (which, thankfully, hasn’t been taken down). More workers (many more) will die if OSHA is eliminated.

My son’s instructor in his dual enrollment American history class has assigned a paper that requires three scholarly sources. For once I am the dad with the tools the kid needs. 😂

Fresh star fruit off my tree. It’s as if Dr. Seuss was asked to make up a fruit.

Honored to do two Black History Month talks next month. One at the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum in Delray Beach on the 12th and another on HCC’s Ybor Campus on the 24th. Humbled to be entrusted with this history.

Just arrived in the mail. Looking forward to reading it. Looks great for next time I teach the early 20th century. Congrats, @greeneland.bsky.social!

By the way, I know about the PBGVs because I have a sweet boy named Louie. I showed them him, too. Showing your dog to students is a sure way to get their attention.

This reminded me that the winner of the 2023 Westminster was a PBGV named…Buddy Holly!
January 26, 2025 at 12:57 AM
Looking her up reminded me that she owned PBGVs. (Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen, if you’re not familiar.)

No one knew who Buddy Holly was. They didn’t know Mary Tyler Moore, either. So I showed them.

Did a search of worldcat for my book and I was so, so - dare I say touched? - to see public and college libraries far from Florida have it on their shelves. I hope it finds its readers there.
