February 1, 2025 A year ago, we decided to shutter UbuWeb. Not really shutter it, per se, but instead to consider it complete. After nearly 30 years, it felt right. But now, with the political changes in America and elsewhere around the world, we have decided to restart our archiving and regrow Ubu. In a moment when our collective memory is being systematically eradicated, archiving reemerges as a strong form of resistance, a way of preserving crucial, subversive, and marginalized forms of expression. We encourage you to do the same. All rivers lead to the same ocean: find your form of resistance, no matter how small, and go hard. It's now or never. Together we can prevent the annihilation of the memory of the world.

SAVE PÁLÁS CINEMA! SAVE VITAL ARTS INFRASTRUCTURE SAVE PÁLÁS! The announcement of the impending closure of Galway's art house cinema, Pálás, is a significant blow to both the city's arts community and its residents. Praxis the Artists' Union of Ireland stands in solidarity with the community as they gather to protest the closure on Monday, 13th January, at 3 p.m. at City Hall, coinciding with the first meeting of Galway City Council this year. Completed in 2018 after prolonged delays and with €8.4 million in public funding, Pálás is a civic arts space owned by Galway City Council. It is crucial that it remains publicly owned and continues to serve the community that financed it. Praxis joins with local artists and activists in urging councilors and staff at Galway City Council to preserve Pálás as a culturally significant, city-centre space. SAVE PÁLÁS! Galway is internationally renowned as a cultural hub and as a home for artists. However, there is a persistent lack of suitable arts infrastructure. Existing venues face challenges to remain open, while artists struggle to find suitable spaces to create and showcase their work. Palas has provided a home to many of Galway's film and arts festivals, strengthening the city's reputation as a UNESCO City of Film. With the right support, Galway's film and arts community possesses the expertise and experience needed to maintain Pálás as a thriving cultural centre. Galway City Council's stated commitment to cultural preservation and development, as outlined in the New Directions Strategic Plan for the Arts 2021-2026, must be backed by concrete action. Praxis supports the community's call to initiate a dialogue about potential solutions and to ensure that the arts remain central to Galway's identity. SAVE PÁLÁS!
