Triple-A devs have struggled to find ways to make RTS profitable beyond the initial buy-in. This is literally it. $5 for a mission pack that expands your rando pool. $5 for a new faction variant with a different set of units and upgrades, like Zero Hour pioneered. Co-op on top of that is icing.

Except now mods exist, so I can point to stuff like Raynor's Gone Roguelike and (cough) SC2 Archipelago as proof that, hey, all those missions become just as fun as the first playthrough with as simple a tweak as adding random elements or shuffling tech unlocks.

The RTS trademark for years was a bunch of handcrafted campaign missions that let you showcase cool units in creative ways; the downside was always that you'd seen everything there was to see after one or two runs.

A lot of people quote the fact that Starcraft 2's Co-op mode gave the game both a massively-expanded playerbase and a way to stay profitable for years, without understanding that the key benefit was that it gave us one (1) source of replayability that was safe from PvP anxiety!
