Thinking of @drkingothebeach.bsky.social today: teaching Toomey et al. (2013: doi.org/10.1130/G341...) [one of my all-time favourite papers] and Ortiz & Ashton (2019: doi.org/10.1016/j.ma...) as we near the end of this year's @sotongeogenviron.bsky.social Y2 coastal module.

Was an absolute pleasure to be @unipd.bsky.social Dipt di Geoscienze last week with @alvitello.bsky.social & others. A hat-trick of seminars (with special thanks to the admin team for advert), lots of time set aside for head-scratching at the board, and delicious food at every turn. The 🤌 best 🤌.

Absolutely magnificent companion papers in @jgrearthsurface.bsky.social by Ajay Limaye – a two-part manifesto that guides the reader through an elegant geometric approach to automatically identify and analyse channel meanders in remotely sensed imagery. (1/3) ⚒️🧪

Wild-eyed rush to prep materials ahead of class tomorrow for UG Y2 @sotongeogenviron.bsky.social coastal students, but relieved that the DEMs of our overwash-morphology-in-a-tank trials are looking pretty good. (I like the aesthetics of these "ghost scans.") Morphometric analysis next.

Y2 @sotongeogenviron.bsky.social coastal students running barrier washover experiments (last week, this week & next). Today’s condition was a built floodplain. This base plate lifted out of tank tidily & intact 👌🏼

New book. Not available for loan until 28 Feb 1975. (Hardcover from 1970.)

I ❤️ inter-library loan.

I know #disaster science has transformed since the late '80s, but I wonder if these authors ever thought this book would age so well.

Maybe it's dismaying that it *has* aged this well, and that so many observations in here are still topical >30 years later.

Treated myself to the @sfiscience.bsky.social Foundational Papers in Complexity Science series (vols 1–3) 📚 and a treat they are.

Introductory essays to each foundational paper! Marginalia and annotations at key moments in each work!

Would love to see what made the "foundational paper" long-list.

Friday 17 May, 3PM UK time, I'll be presenting the next **EuroCoast Zoominar** (I'm excited) on some work I have underway:

"Emergency landscaping" – morphodynamic interventions in coastal hazards

Snapped this scenic overlook of Lantic Bay (Cornwall) especially for @simonmariusmudd.bsky.social

On the other side of this hedge, a big puddle always forms on the street. Cars & busses roll through it, sending a wave over the kerb. I walked past these washover deposits onto the brick walk (annotated to emphasise them) & did a double-take. They’d already been scattered by pedestrians, but still.

Made it to Pemaquid Point (midcoast Maine) in August - been many years since I was there last. A geologist’s delight. And everywhere you look, meanders that aren’t.
