It is very funny to me that Moyn's whole brand is "I'm a cynical realist about politics" and he's wholly outflanked on it by a level of cynicism in Trump's worldview to the point that he ends up sounding naive.

It's why the best scene of Evil Does Not Exist for me is the town meeting, he has this incredible ability to really inhabit moments of complex human interaction where you're riveted the whole time. Genuinely don't know how he does it.

It is my favourite Hamaguchi movie. Totally understand why people get intimidated by the crazy length but he's a filmmaker whose work only gets better the more time he takes with something.

Yeah it's not rational, people think underpass they basically think that scene from Irreversible is going to happen. Some actually decent lighting and a security camera or two fixes the issue (provided things are maintained) but it looms large in the public imagination.

Many such cases. Fortitude s1 rocked and there was literally zero story to tell afterwards. I didn’t even bother with s2. See also Big Little Lies. I’m also nervous about Shogun because there’s no more book and I’ve yet to see that go well.

Extremely depressing to see videos of young people leaving the UK because the cost of living is ruining everything and then all the responses are about the "foreign races" are ruining everything. Whole country is cooked.

I was kind of amazed how great it looked and how wonderful all the acting was in the service of a truly stupid and dire story.

My mom was a union organizer for 25 years. I walked picket lines of wildcat strikes with her. We used to run bake sales and trivia nights to support striking workers. You wouldn't survive 3 seconds in her vagina. It would shrivel up what's left of your balls. I miss her terribly.

I actually think it’s going to prove a social disaster that we’ve removed all the cultural gatekeepers for fame so a ludicrously aspirational job like “movie actor” has been replaced with “twitch streamer” and “YouTuber”

Really had a lightbulb moment last year coming across that quote that the most interesting question you can ask about China is why the past 15 years of predictions of its imminent collapse have failed.

For all his bluster about climate change being a hoax, these are all the actions of a right wing government that deeply believes that fresh water supplies will be vital to secure in the coming decades.
