People saying Retsu is pretty crazy to me because over and over again he's shown to be one of the best. Consistently stronger than characters like Doppo or Shibukawa, but not strong enough for the big leagues like Oliva or Jack

It's kinda funny how you mention that because despite how absurd Baki can be, it is not foreign to have the characters talk about their emotions and change. It's not like the series itself is about their feelings or something but they do showcase these things rather often for a series like this

Baki's still far from completely fixing its scanlation issues, but there have since been some great strides. The childhood arc of the series and even a bit before it have been completely redone by Project Ryoko on Mangadex with these beautiful quality scans, and its also getting an english release

Itagaki is unironically so damn good at drawing people it's just that he isn't EVER scared of showing how ugly the human face can be at times. I'm studying his artstyle rn and he can make some of the prettiest faces ive ever seen before making one of the weirdest, yet it always looks plausible
