Louise Murphy starts her presentation by noting that the number of young people not in education, employment or training (NEET) has risen by 195,000 over the past two years to reach 940,000.
It is on track to hit one million for the first time since the aftermath of the financial crisis.

Very good thread on the latest labour market data 👇
Today's stories saying the unemployment rate has risen from 4.6 to 4.7% tell only part of the story. The same data - the Labour Force Survey - shows this rise comes from more people who were inactive starting to look for work and so being classified as unemployed, which is good news 🧵 /1

Brilliant first key note speech at @easp-spa-2025.bsky.social by Sophia Seung-Yoon Lee on the ‘melting’ of labour, the rise of precarities among the young, the drift of the social protection system - and the political consequences of it all. Covering all aspects of the conference theme in one go!

That awkward first post... I'm here now as well. Interested in social and public policy, labour market and employment issues (notably self-employment), teaching and learning in higher education, politics, a good dosage of art and culture.
