We enjoyed our family vacation in the Pacific Northwest and returned to an all too familiar place: Mount Angel, my spiritual home. It is a joy to bring my family here to meet the monks. What can Benedictine spirituality offer the world today?
As we descend the mountain: gratitude for the memories and love
This past week, we made a trip up to the Pacific Northwest. It was refreshing to come back to this part of the world with my family. There was cause for remembrance and thanksgiving for all that God has given. On the first day, we stopped by the Catholic cemetery to pay my respects to Archbishop Vlazny. His kindness has been etched in my memory.

Gazes and gestures invite the viewer to deep conversation. Benvenuto Tisi, also known as Garofalo, most likely painted this small work for private devotion. Central to the image is the Virgin Mary in all her regal beauty, adorned with light. The lively Christ child plays with the keys which he will later give to Peter. His energetic pose is contrasting to Mary whose eyes look on him with love as she sits on the royal throne.

Today is the feast of the Sacred Heart. Pope Francis said, "The heart of Christ, as the symbol of the deepest and most personal source of his love for us, is the very core of the initial preaching of the Gospel. It stands at the origin of our faith, as the wellspring that refreshes and enlivens our Christian beliefs." Here is a post on my grandmother and how she reminded me of the Sacred Heart.

June 16: A Special Day of Baptism and Oblation
"To live till we die— being willing to go on learning all the way to the end— takes a great deal of emotional balance. To be amenable, to continue working through all the dimensions of life till we see their value for us is the essence of spiritual maturity." Benedictine master, Sister Joan Chittister, strikes my heart with her quote. I use this post to tease out its meaning on this special anniversary. Enjoy this post as you LISTEN or READ and remember to share with a friend!

Understanding Pentecost: More Than a Church Birthday
Today is Pentecost. Today, we contemplate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Church. Saint Cyril of Jerusalem taught, "The Spirit comes gently and makes himself known by his fragrance. He is not felt as a burden, for he is light, very light. Rays of light and knowledge stream before him as he approaches. The Spirit comes with the tenderness of a true friend and protector to save, to heal, to teach, to counsel, to strengthen, to console. The Spirit comes to enlighten the mind first of the one who receives him, and then, through him, the minds of others as well." I share thoughts on the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Church. It is the grand finale of Easter. Please share this post!
