Consider how many people you know that voted differently than you did. About 75% of the states I’ve been invited to speak and consult in fall into the red areas. About 99% of my fly fishing guides do as well. It can be hard to understand people if you don’t get to know ‘em.

Still thinking about things Deborah Appleman and Carol Jago said in our session yesterday about "teaching in troubled times." One question/idea we returned to throughout: to what extent and in what way(s) should education and literature "disturb" students and readers?

The recent Texas decision to incorporate the Bible into the curriculum is worth keeping an eye on. I had to teach a 6-week Bible as/in Lit unit my first 3 years at a public school in 1989. This is the book we used. apnews.com/article/texa...

Looked at Pollan's "Food Rules" yesterday. Pithy statements like "If it's a plant, eat it; if it's made in a plant, don't." For teaching: If it challenges students' thinking, teaching it; if the thinking is challenged, don't." Your turn. Here's sample from Pollan.
