No 11: DTE's customer's suffer for bloated ROE

MPSC has granted DTE Electric a 9.9% ROE, return on equity, on the 10.25 or 10.5% requested in all four rate cases finalized since 2020. If their proposed rate increase of $574 million is approved, 18.6% of that, $107 million, will go straight to ROE.

No 10: DTE's Hardest Hit census tracts face #Extreme_Unaffordability

We found that DTE's 33 hardest hit census tracts spend 7.7% of their incomes on electricity (double the affordability threshold).

No. 9: DTE caps enrollment for their low-income retrofit program at 1,000 slots.

🙄 Surprise, surprise, when a program can actually have a meaningful long term impact on affordability, DTE caps enrollment. 1,000 slots means this program serves just 0.2% of low-income customers.

No. 8: DTE #Perpetuates_Poverty and #Fails_At_Affordability

More than 1 in 4 customers DTE classified as low-income was shut off from April 2022 – April 2024.

This is a clear indication that its low-income programs are failing to ensure continuous access to energy.

No 7: DTE has #Terrible_Customer_Service

The Better Business Bureau website is riddled with reviews like these. Failure to deal with live wires, wrongful shutoffs, etc. Know of any other industries where this type of negligence is met with a huge raise?

No.7: DTE #Cant_Keep_The_Lights_On 🕯️

"More than 13% of DTE Electric customers experienced four or more interruptions in 2023, and nearly 45% experienced interruptions of eight hours or more," according to a 3rd party audit commissioned by the MPSC.

No. 5: DTE Treats Residential Customers As Their Cash Cow

This week DTE reported a 14% bump in Q2 earnings vs 2024, due largely to the last rate increase MPSC approved. Somehow that's *still* not enough. They've proposed an 11% residential rate increase, but for industrial customers? Just 5.6%.

No.3: DTE's #Dark_Money_Corruption

How can you ensure that your rate increases pass year after year? Why not buy out the politicians?

"Of Michigan’s 148 state senators and representatives, 138 – almost all of them – have logged campaign contributions from DTE’s Political Action Committee (PAC)..."

💲💲💲💲💲💲💲💲💲💲💲
Hmmm, DTE is asking for a $574,000,000 rate increase.

Does our monopoly utility really need that? Investors seem happy as it is. In the last six quarters on record, DTE stock has risen 54%, from $89 to $137 per share.

💰DTE is proposing an 11% increase in residential electric rates.
🤡This is clown-with-a-chainsaw scary.
For the next 11 days, we'll share 11 reasons why MPSC should #Reject_DTE's_Rate_Case!

We're an expert witness in the case and compiling these into testimony with Soulardarity and WeWantGreenToo.

💲DTE forces 12 months of cash payments for 1 bounced check. DTE must make those cash payments really easy to deliver, right? Of course not. Payments can be made at special kiosks only located in Wayne County. Or they can make payments at authorized agent locations, but they charge fees.

Mamdani said it best: “The system wasn’t broken—it was working exactly as designed, just not for working people.” In 2023, Con Ed shut off ~60k households. 1 in 5 NYC households have unaffordable energy bills! This isn’t individual failure—it’s systemic injustice. Energy is a right, not a privilege.

🔥 Proof that vertical #monopoly utilities oppose community solar just to protect profits! For rooftop, community solar, ‘we’re all for it,’ ComEd says
Electric utility ComEd and its parent company Exelon spoke in a keynote session at the Midwest Solar Expo about why, as utilities, they want growth in the community solar and rooftop solar markets.

Just 21 states track shutoffs. At the height of COVID, 42 states reported utility shutoffs and ALL had some form of moratorium on shutoffs. During this crisis, officials recognized electricity as essential. Since 2024 only 21 states report shutoff data - half the country’s shutoffs are invisible.

Did you know that 1 in 5 households in the US faces an unaffordable energy bill?

Behind these numbers are real families facing impossible choices between heating, food, medicine, and rent.
