In Afrikaans we use horlosie for both clock and watch. A watch kan be a polshorlosie (wristwatch) or sakhorlosie (pocket watch).

Oh wow! I didn't know that. I've been based in Midrand for the last 16+ years, but I grew up in Port Elizabeth. I have a soft spot for the Western Cape because I studied in Stellenbosch.

Yes, it is Zulu. I am South African and learnt some Xhosa at school, but where I live nowadays, Zulu is a lingua franca, so I'm learning it to understand my colleagues better. It is just similar enough to Xhosa to confuse me!

Our dogs also love having their chins scratched. Our Erica looks just like Ladybird, but is younger. Which makes me wonder, why do you write Happiness, but Ladybird? Here in South Africa we have 2 towns, Ladysmith and Ladismith. I almost wrote Ladibird, hence this what triggered this diatribe.
