I often see people call some of the more experimental-ish art "self-indulgent" or "masturbatory" (i.e. earlier Thomas Pynchon books) even in cases where it's just the author trying to communicate a niche idea at the expense of the art being conventionally enjoyable. You need confidence to pull this.
