Object 3: Clothes coupons and Teddy Boys
In June 1941, clothes rationing was introduced in the UK due to preserve cloth for the armed forces and because of fewer cloth workers. Clothing coupons were created that restricted how many items of clothing an individual could buy at one time.

There are objects that are important to British youth culture that are of their time, and there are objects that are timeless. The biker jacket is the latter. Although first worn as a symbol of rebellion in the 1950s, it pops up time and again worn by new generations and their idols. 🧵

Hello again! I hope to start posting the first thread about objects that shaped British Youth Culture in the next week or so. The objects will be posted in a roughly chronological order over the coming weeks, with two or three posts a week at first. If I can write and post quicker, I will.

Just a quick hi to introduce this account! Over the coming few months I will be posting threads about youth culture in Britain from the 1950s to the end of the 20th century. The idea is to create a virtual ‘museum’ of objects that tell a story of young British people in the post-war years.
