Last week, our members testified the Cook County Board of Commissioners meeting. We called on the Board to freeze law enforcement spending to protect funding for essential services like violence prevention, behavioral health, and community investment to reduce intra-community violence.

It is essential that State’s Attorney Burke work with court stakeholders to reduce the number of people incarcerated in Cook County Jail. Failing to do so has the potential to reverse years of progress made by Cook County stakeholders while exacerbating the harm and violence in our communities.

Under Eileen O'Neill Burke, there has been a dramatic increase in request for pretrial detention, even though crime has been steadily trending downward.

Cook County State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke has implemented several policy changes that are contributing to a rise in pretrial jailing. It is notable that there has been no rise in crime that would explain this increase in pretrial jailing.

The FAIR Act has passed through both chambers of the state legislature! Illinois will launch a statewide office of public defense in 2027!

This marks the first time Illinois has significantly updated its public defense structure since 1949. endmoneybond.org/2025/05/31/i...

The Illinois Senate just voted to pass the FAIR Act!

The bill is now headed back to the House for concurrence. Illinois is incredibly close to securing a statewide office of public defense!
