palatinamedea imagine a piece of media of say... epic... proportions, which begins with the discussion of a person of the male gender and his arms. in this tale also: • the beginning of the protagonist's journey is when he escapes from his home as it is destroyed in a conflagration, with some of his friends and family. • in particular, he manages to save his father, who unfortunately dies during the course of the adventure. • the protagonist learns that he and his friends have a duty and a destiny to found a new home for them and their descendants. • they have a long journey fraught with danger to find such a place, meeting a variety of enemies and allies along the way. • prophecies for the future and the theme of the struggle to fulfil personal destiny is a very prominent thread throughout the tale. what is going to or should happen is as constantly prevalent an idea as what is currently being narrated. • the events of the story are essentially orchestrated by various Higher Powers, some of them hostile to the protagonists, who intervene with the characters' lives down to a very personal level in order to bring about their fate. • various important characters die along the way, many of whom are encountered again when others... literally visit the world of the dead • they meet their own ancestors and descendants in this place as well. • even after the characters have reached the place fated to become their new home, they still have even greater battles to fight. the antagonists, it turns out, were already there. • the story overall is not told in chronological order, nor through only one voice or viewpoint - its allusion to future and past events gives it a much wider narrative scope. homestuck? you might presume? or am I describing the Aeneid by Publius Vergilius Maro (Virgil), written in the 1st century BCE? Is this a good time to bring up that both feature an example of the epic trope ekphrasis (describing an in-universe work of art that functions as a story-in-the-story) which contains both hints to future events in the story and references to modern political figures in the real world, and that those are specifically the shield of Aeneas and Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff? *artistic rendering of the shield of aeneas except it is decorated with SBaHJ panels instead*
