If I had to guess, part of the rationale might have been to try and say, "Hey, look how cool these graphics are! It's like you're watching a movie!" Unfortunately I feel like Halo 3 specifically was just a little too early to the party to pull it off effectively.

One of my favorite recurring elements in Metroid fan art is reimagining Samus' armor as a jacket or something. I don't know why, it's just really cool to me!
