This is an extraordinary tree. The trunk is very thick & parts of the tree seem dead, but in the midst of it, a massive branch grows & thrives.

Our world is not OK, but we can choose life over war.

The tale of two frightened villages

This is the first story, I wrote for THE END OF ALL WARS in 2022. _____________________________________________________ THE TALE OF TWO FRIGHTENED VILLAGES plus a title graphic: charcoal, abstract figures, black and red, facing each other I remember the first time my parents told me this story. I was so excited. And later, I was not surprised to learn that this is a popular story on our planet. THE TALE OF TWO FRIGHTENED VILLAGES Once upon a time there were two villages. The Molos lived in one village. The Tiblies in the other. The Molos were afraid of the Tiblies and told their children never to go near the other village. The Tiblies were afraid of the Molos and told their children never to go near the other village. ‘But why?’ I interrupted my parent. They smiled at me. ‘That, my child, is the question of questions. You see, the big trouble was that no one asked WHY? – not in the Molos village nor in the Tiblies village. Each village kept to themselves and lived in fear of the other until—‘ ‘—until what?’ I exclaimed in excitement. ‘—until an old woman from the Molos village dressed up like a Tiblies and went to find out what the Tiblies were like and what had made them so terrible.’ ‘How did she know how to dress?’ I asked rather smugly. My parent smiled. ‘This Molos woman had always been a bit of an adventurer, and over her long life, she had occasionally amused herself with watching the Tiblies at their river.’ ‘Their river?’ ‘Each village had their own forest, meadows and river, all of which provided them with plenty of food and space. This way they never met by chance. As a deterrent, the elders of each village had drawn lines between the two areas and reinforced them with curses.’ ‘But curses are fake,’ I protested. ‘You believe that. And so do I. But what if we had told you that there is a curse which can cripple you if you stepped over the lines between the lands?’ ‘Hm,’ I mumbled, feeling a little chill. ‘What happened to the Molos woman? Did something happen to her when she crossed the lines?’ ‘No. And she already knew that from her earlier adventures. However, she had never been close to the other village. So she had to spy some more to find out where the Tiblies usually entered their village. Carrying some dead rabbits, her disguise was so good that she got inside the Tiblies village without raising any suspicions.’ ‘And?’ ‘And she was surprised that despite some differences, she couldn’t find out why anyone would be afraid of the Tiblies. Eventually she asked an old woman, who was writing poetry for the upcoming village dance. The poet looked puzzled. And a little suspicious, she returned: “But everyone knows the Molos are terrible.” “How does everyone know?” “Are you questioning the wisdom of your parents and the insights of our elders?” The Molos woman smiled. “Not their wisdom, but maybe their knowledge. Besides, if we understood why the Molos are terrible, maybe we could share our wisdom with them, and they wouldn’t have to be terrible any more.”‘ My parent paused, lost in thoughts. ‘What happened?’ My parent looked at me wistfully. ‘Eventually the Molos woman revealed who she was, and the two women spent days talking, trying to find out why their villages lived in fear of each other. Gradually they included other members of their villages in their conversations. And for some weeks it looked as if the two villages could finally rid themselves of their fears. But then some small groups formed in each village, and they slaughtered members of the other village, proving just how dreadful their neighbours are. Among the dead were the two old women who had started the conversation.’ My parent paused again, then they added: ‘But the seed of Why?, the question of questions, had been sown, and so others attempted to expose the unfounded prejudices. Some more died. But decades later, the two villages finally made peace — and neither village lived in fear of the other any more.

planet 39 Language (2) We all thought it was a joke and none of us was inclined to pay much attention to this challenge. But challenges have a way of prodding us. And at some point we were so annoyed by the constant repetition of the challenge that we accepted the it - just to silence the culprit and to demonstrate how wrong the challenger was. I think, it’s a wonderful mechanism that humans tend to react to challenges like this. It’s what saved our planet from total destruction. Here is the challenge, and it makes me smile to imagine how you will reject it, just like we did, or maybe you are wiser than we were. This is the challenge: Let’s drop every word and phrase that brings up our defences. And then let’s have an actual conversation about content. And whenever we are in danger of starting to label each other, our conflicts or our convictions with new (or old) words again, let’s push them aside and continue to actually listen and talk. This was the end of throwing around labels, slogans and accusations. And it was the beginning of finding common ground and visions for our planet.

Love is treacherous – and we loved the weapons we built. Not just that. We were obsessed with building ever more sophisticated and ever more deadly weapons. And we were good at it. Superior. Have you ever broken with a love? It hurts. A lot. But at the end of the day, it was a question of whether we wanted to live or suffer. Our weapons, beautiful as they were, only caused suffering. Now we live and have found new loves. But it wasn’t easy to get there.

Being human is quite amazing, full of surprises, full of discoveries, full of wonder and joy. How much we had missed out on when all we knew was competition, performing, escaping our dire reality and hoarding riches.

planet 34 Arrogance Our scholars read all the amazing testimonies published by the universe alliance of how the people of other planets ended all wars, and our scholars remarked that one particular root of war was missing in most testimonies: arrogance. Many centuries ago, the people of our planet nearly destroyed everything because their arrogance didn’t allow them to empower each other. Instead of recognising what every single citizen has to offer, how rich every person’s mind is (or can be if used), how many solutions are already on offer, instead of recognising all of this, our ancestors kept the circle of those who whined about the state of the world small, and instead of shaping the world, they sank deeper into the conviction that only the thoughts of a few must ever have value. Unfortunately the thoughts they favoured were those of doom and complaint instead of being bold and shape a world that that allows us to thrive. On our planet, every child knows this story and learns to value each person’s mind and ideas. This is the story of how our ancestors overcame their arrogance.

‘How come that nature is so perfect and we get so much wrong?’ ‘We are perfect, too. Our bodies and minds are potentially amazing. But we still have a lot to learn. I mean, when we gained a kind of greater consciousness, no one was there to teach us. We went exploring and like every explorer, we got things wrong.’ ‘We seem to have gotten a lot wrong.’ ‘Yes, and we will need all our ingenuity to do better.’ Some of us smiled a little. ‘Balance. In nature balance is not about powers. Not like we understand it where nine nations build the most deadly weapons and then demand to be recognised as powers who hold each other in check. In nature balance is the opposite: each organism has a role, and each role is essential to the balance of the whole.’ ‘You’re right. Balance in nature means that there is no power, that nothing is strong enough to dominate. In nature there is just diversity and abundance intertwined in an eternal dance to keep in motion, to evolve, to be part of the cycle, to live and be. Sometimes I think, nature just loves to create, to try new variations, to follow another whimsical idea. Nature is not strategic or efficient. Strike Whenever someone starts a war on our planet, the people of our planet go on a strike. We don’t tolerate war and if some leader thinks they have to attack another country or that they have to oppress the people of their country, then the rest of the world answers with silent protest. Luckily, no one can go to war who doesn’t have an industry behind it. With no one working, a war is impossible. With no one working in any country, a war becomes every government’s problem because people will stay silently on the streets until the conflict or the injustice is resolved. It is funny, that in frequent intervals there is always someone who thinks they can get away with starting a war and who believes that their justifications are good enough not to face opposition. But so far, all our people are heroes. And we sometimes joke that it is good that somehow warmongers get to the head of states frequently. This way the people of our planet never forget their own power in standing up to warmongers but also their duty to stand by each other. We are after all one planet. Anyone who says otherwise lacks imagination and probably has yet to learn to enjoy life.

There will always be wars.’ ‘It is nonsense to believe that you could end a single war if you don’t end all wars, not just on the battle fields but also in the minds. Everything else is just another war, waiting to needlessly destroy our fellow humans and our planet. We can only end all wars if we rethink practically everything that has brought us to this point, our economic systems, our lack of connection to nature, our damaged souls, our overloaded minds, the way we build, the way we communicate, dress, and so much more. But it can be done if we decide to do it.’

That I began to question & rethink my relationship to insects is thanks to a small detail in Nemonte Nenquimo's powerful testimony.

She tells about fire flies she had as pets & something in me stirred.
