Jane Austen and the Sanditon series are why I’m here (mostly).
Part Two of #Perdita, Chapter 8: Florizel and Perdita
The Prince Regent was 17 on December 3, 1779 when he went to a performance of Florizel and Perdita, Garrick’s adaptation of A Winter’s Tale where Mary Robinson had the role of Perdita “the lost one” and she caught his eye.

Mary Robinson got many offers from wealthy men to be placed under their protection, like Sir John Lade (heir to brewery fortune). Portrait by Joshua Reynolds. Gossip rags claimed that they were having an affair. #PaulaByrneBookClub

Mary held her ground, even though Brereton had many valid points (Tom being stupid with money, Tom’s infidelity). There were rumors of an affair with manager Richard Sheridan of Drury Lane, although Mary said that there was nothing to it (Portrait by John Hoppner 1750) #Perdita

Mary was received very well in her theater debut. She was paid £10 for each appearance as Juliet. There are examples of many positive reviews of Mary’s performance. She went on to play other parts in other plays for Sheridan. Above: new entrance to Drury Lane 1775 #Perdita

This is a nice link to “The Story of Theatre” on the Victoria & Albert Museum with a section on 18th century theatre and one on David Garrick (portrait below). I was able to visit the V & A museum last summer but did not see this. Next time. #PaulaByrneBookClub

Mary Robinson debuted on stage at Drury Lane on December 10 1776 and got a round of “thundering applause” according to her Memoirs. She was listed on the playbill as “A Young Lady” londonstagedatabase.uoregon.edu/event.php?id=3…#Perditata

Mary’s husband was released from the Fleet on Aug 3, 1776 and her poems “Captivity” and “Celadon and Lydia” were published in 1777. You can read copy of it here (actual photos of the book) archive.org/details/bim_ei…#Perditat#PaulaByrneBookClubub

Mary went with Tom to debtors’ prison with their baby, but she could come and go (learned this from Dickens’ Bleak House). Tom was imprisoned for 15 months, but played a lot of racquets! Etching by By Rudolph Ackermann/ Augustus Charles Pugin/ Thomas Rowlandson

Chapter 5 of #Perdita: Debtors’ Prison
Mary and Thomas Robinson hoped for help from his father Harris at Tregunter, who didn’t treat her well and had her stay at Trevecca House for her confinement. Photo of Trevecca by Monjo Hakashi commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?cu…

Mary Robinson had to tell David Garrick she must give up her acting career because she was married, and even though she had wasted the time he spent training her, he was gracious and supportive. #Perdita (see alt text for artist)

Mary was mentored by David Garrick whose acting style distinguished himself from others by being realistic instead of bombastic, to play Cordelia to his King Lear. Paula writes that Mary experiences the “buzz” of celebrity which was Mary’s own word. Crazy. #Perdita

Excited to be able to watch season 5 of All Creatures Great and Small tonight in the US, but it would be great if we could see #BenLloydHughes as Rob McAloon in season 6! It would have been nice if Young James Herriot had been continued but this could work 😁

Chapter 1 of Perdita “During A Tempstuous Night” is about Mary’s upbringing in Bristol. She was born at the St Augustine monastery (baptized July 19, 1758). Her father was born in America and was working there often, and had a mistress there.

My hazy Mom Memory finally comes through for me when I look at the photo I took inside Chawton House where I remember looking at the portrait of the beautiful woman for a bit. I must have read the card next to it… #Perdita
