A good number of social media reactions have been positive and supportive of recognizing the history of the mountain extending past the old (Clingman's) name.

It's been interesting to see those claiming to be"local" reacting by saying there shouldn't be a name change because the Cherokee might have "colonized" another tribe/name off the mountain or that the Cherokee were aligned with the Confederacy so renaming to remove Clingman's name is hollow

The disrespect of Mount Mitchell.....
