Calling scientists, surfers, swimmers and ocean lovers🌊

On Sunday 20 July 2025 I'll be hosting the largest paddle-out in the UK from Sennen Beach, Cornwall at 3pm.
🏊Swim or paddle out on your surf boards🏄, kayaks, canoes🛶 or cheer from the shoreline 🏖️ to #DefendtheDeep against #DeepSeaMining.

Paddle out to sea with us on 📅 Sunday 20th July to #DefendtheDeep 🌊
This day coincides with the International Seabed Authority’s council meeting, deciding the fate of our Deep Ocean 🦑
In this global paddle out we are calling on governments to say no to #DeepSeaMining.

For this #SundayFishSketch we have the lovely vivid Neon damselfish, Pomacentrus coelestis.

And for today's #SundayFishSketch it is Sargocentron caudimaculatum in the spotlight. My favourite of the squirrelfishes I met in French Polynesia 🐠🏝️

When I'm not conducting, analysing and writing #scientific #research on #coral #reef #fishes, I want to illustrate it 🐠 I enjoyed exploring the detail in this Epinephelus merra for my latest graphical abstract. #SundayFishSketch
Let me know if you'd like me to draw your science🖌️

🚨Do not watch if eating a #noodle based dish 🍜

Is there a #marine #invertebrate #biologist who can explain what is happening here? 🪱

We weren't anticipating our #anemonefish to fend off a nighttime attack from the #spaghetti kingdom🍝

6/ 25 nights of light had #community-scale impacts on coral reef #nightlife, but only three nights was too short to elicit changes. This suggests that there could be #low-cost solutions to reduce impacts of artificial light on #coral reef #inhabitants🏝️

4/ Taking a closer look, all species present on artificially illuminated reefs were #predatory fish—that feed on #zooplankton🦐, small #fish 🐟 and #invertebrates🪱

3/ Using novel underwater #infrared (AKA #night-vision 🕵️‍♀️) cameras we found a larger number of fish species were present on artificially illuminated #reefs at night compared to control sites with no artificial light. 📈

2/ 15% of global coral reefs experience brighter nights due to human activity 🪸 but how does light pollution disrupt coral reefs at night? 🌙
