Excerpt from Herbert Hoover’s Wikipedia page concerning tariffs. Former President Hoover signed the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act into law in June 1930 despite its unpopularity and the warnings from many economists. He meant to help farmers suffering in the Dust Bowl by raising agricultural tariffs, but the bill raised tariffs on MANY other goods as well. Many other countries retaliated by raising their own tariffs, and both international trade and the U.S. economy (already in the early stages of the Great Depression) worsened. History is echoing into the present…
An excerpt from the Wikipedia page of 31st POTUS Herbert Hoover. This specifically refers to Hoover’s infamous tariff bill, the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930; it was widely unpopular, and many economists objected to its signing into law. Hoover’s initial intent was to help farmers affected by the Dust Bowl farm crisis of the 1920s, but his plans got tangled with a bill that broadly raised tariffs on MANY goods. Angered by these tariffs, Canada, France, and other nations raised their own tariffs, souring international trade and the American economy. This caused a rift between Hoover and the more progressive members of his Republican Party, but it also contributed to the worsening of the Great Depression, which was still in its early years.
