Reading and writing my way out of my patriarchal Mormon upbringing. Relearning history and finding a new way forward.
I grew up in a conservative religious bubble that did not teach me about racism or sexism. So I had no idea that my church's teachings and policies were racist and sexist. As a woman in the church I experienced sexist treatment at every turn while being told how much they loved and valued women.
They want to gut funding for schools and take legal action against teachers that discuss:
- Racism and sexism
- That white supremacy is real and has influenced U.S. policy since its inception
- The need to dismantle systemic barriers

This sums up my experience as a woman in Mormonism and with many Mormon and even ex-Mormon men even now. When you question or challenge their ideas, that control slips into anger or into befuddlement b/c they don't know how to talk to a woman if she's not just listening and nodding in agreement.
