Due to shrinking wetland habitats, competition from other tree species, and other ecological factors, the tree is listed under the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act as a "species of special concern." Next time you’re in the Riverway, stop by and say hello to this special tree!

Once mature, the trees are drought- and fire-tolerant, making them one of the most widespread oak species on the continent—they’re found as far north as Manitoba and as far south as coastal Texas! In Massachusetts, bur oaks are most often found in or near wetlands.
