I think people are more likely to default to the other when its personal? Maybe as a defense mechanism? But I swear I've heard "My car broke down last night" "Oh, I'm Sorry" "That's okay its not your fault" too many times to dismiss it. I blame our poorly funded education system.

I honestly think the misconception is the most common way its perceived.
