MIKE: Right now, I notice, there is a worship of the New. NORMAN: Well, naturally. There's only one thing new to anyone. That's himself. That's why we paint in the first person singular. MIKE: It doesn't look so singular to me. Why idle that Hot-of-the-griddle art is usually hot off somebody else's griddle? FRANK: Bob says we're a generation of swipers. ELAINE: Joan says Norman said: It's third person art parading as first FRANK: George says Mayakovsky says Third person art involves craftsmanship. MIKE: All art involves craftsmanship. ELAINE: Dada didn't. MIKE: Yes, but Neo-Dada does. As soon as any gesture is repeated, craft is involved. JOAN: Neo-Dada has become Neo-Mama. NORMAN: Neo-Mau Mau, you mean. FRANK: Neo-Meow Meow. MIKE: Neo-Moo Moo. ELAINE: Well, according to a noted museum director, the only thing that sells right now is Neo-Me Me. FRANK: Someone who recently left the country said: Why is it all right to be influenced by a dead artist and a scandal if you're influenced by a live one? FRANK: It just proves you can't depend on the Bible for guidance. JOAN: The panel should buy a Bible and read it under a tree until an apple falls on its head. Then it might discover gravity. FRANK: Simone de Beauvoir says Sade said: There would be neither gravitation nor movement.... NORMAN: She also says he said: The idea of God is the sole wrong for which I cannot forgive mankind. ELAINE: Anne Porter's Godmother, Miss Kelly, says: You have to believe in Hell, but you don't have to believe there's anybody in it. Intro to the roundtable: Script conceived and recorded by Elaine de Kooning after three evenings of private discussion by Joan Mitchell, Elaine de Kooning, Frank O'Hara, Mike Goldberg, and Norman Bluhm of the panel, with careful attention to misattribu-tion and misquotation in keeping with the spirit of the art world. (Some of the quotes, however, are accurate.) The script was then tampered with by Frank O Hara with further alterations by the other members of the panel. Final tampering and typing by Elaine de Kooning.

But speaking up isn't easy and the hard distinction between the 'good guys' and the 'bad guys', makes these conversations even more difficult. Patriarchy does not mean that men cannot act decently, and kindly, indeed that the men in our lives may not sometimes be better and more reliable than the women. But it does mean that there are no men, no people, who can ever claim to be entirely beyond its reach. It is always there in the background, incentivising, rewarding and giving cover to good men who decide, however briefly, not to be.
