My poetry-collection-in-progress features a character inspired by my favorite @themountaingoats.bsky.social 's song, "Possum by Night." Her name is St. Joan the Opossum. The first poem I wrote about her, "The Possum's Hymn," is now available to read in issue 9 of Last Leaves Literary Magazine.
The Possum’s Hymn The possum keeps her prayers to herself. On her early morning rounds, she mumbles the daily office, nibbles a tick. She licks dew from her nose— breaks a mushroom in two— partakes of the sacrament. Moldering leaves are incense enough. She considers the monastic worms, their careful transcription of holy ground. Much to ponder in the mulch. She catalogs a catechism of sunrises, wrappers, roadkill (remember you are dust)— singing all good gifts around me are sent from heaven above, tallied in the roots and beetles: a panoply of love.
