Some thoughts on the 40th anniversary of Dragon Ball
The first chapter of Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball was released to the world on this day, November 20, exactly forty years ago in Weekly Shōnen Jump. From its humble start as a gag manga parody of Journey to the West, it quickly evolved into inarguably one of the most important, influential, globally impactful works of Japanese media of all time. The fact that Toriyama himself passed away early this year is incredibly bittersweet. I'm sure he would have had something to say on this occasion. But his legacy lives on through his work, not only with Daima and the Super manga, but for the generations who have yet to discover the magic of Dragon Ball. It's not an exaggeration to say this franchise is one of the most important in my life. Not only was it my anime and manga gateway drug, it was my gateway into fandom period. I discovered fansites, message boards, fanfiction, dōjinshi, fan translations, and so on directly from Dragon Ball. It completely changed the direction of my life in terms of media consumption and appreciation. Watching the series again with my partner for his very first time, I'm reminded how truly special it is. The shōnen genre has followed Dragon Ball's example for decades, but none has fully recreated the quirky charm, freshness, and creativity that defined Toriyama's entire artistic output. Happy birthday Dragon Ball. Thank you for everything, and I can't wait for even more adventures down the line.
