What excellent timing!
I came across this new vegan steak in Aldi today.
I look forward to eating it!

I really enjoyed presenting to the Civil Service Climate& Environment Network with @profpaulbehrens.bsky.social today on food systems transformations to plant-rich diets (with small/no amounts of meat and dairy).

The feedback was lovely too!

- We need better evidence on modal shift to ebikes, but it looks promising

- Ebikes can be really beneficial for those with chronic conditions - they can choose the level of assist&take part in sociable rides. But the bikes are heavy so they're harder to manoeuvre when you're off them/change a tire

Really enjoying the ebike session at #EHPS2025

Key lessons
- Ebike users are even more pro active transport than regular bike users
- You can reach moderate/vigorous physical activity (MVPA) on an ebike. @annabarrero.bsky.social

The #EHPS2025 conference schedule is making me choose between ebikes and legumes. This is cruel!

Thank you Fietsverhuur! www.fietsverhuurgroningen.com/en/homepage-...

I knew it was a good idea to pack my phone/bike attachment.

There was also an "Emmaviaduct" en route. Amazing.

It's just so so glorious to be able to cycle around here so easily - in terms of getting a bike&using it.

A 5 minute walk away from my hotel and I can hire this lovely bike for 4 days for 39 euros to get around Groningen.

And I can join the conference organised bike tour!

The cycle to the venue was a dream - the infrastructure is so intuitive - even when you're in a hurry and running late!

Delighted that #EHPS2025 conference has a sustainable travel award (100 euros each) for those who've travelled furthest to be here without flying.

This needs normalising across academia. We have a huge blind spot when it comes to flying.

Congratulations to this year's winners!

This looked like a main road from Google maps and it's still so quiet!

The motorbikes here are loud *like everywhere) but that will get solved with the shift to electric.

The conference venue is a 40 minute walk away, so I think I'd better go Dutch and try to hire a bike. Updates to follow!

Here are some parked cars along the canal. It still feels very active travel heavy.

Though imo this area could use some benches to make it more people friendly.

Bath has a lovely pedestrianised area but there's not really space to cycle (I forget if it's permitted or not).

Pedestrianised areas in the UK feel like they tend to be in places that are chockablock with people all the time.
Here there's space to spare, and still no cars.

I'm not sure I've ever seen so much space given over to walking, wheeling AND cycling.

What are the best examples in the UK (and elsewhere!) would you say?

In Oxford our pedestrian and cycling streets are pretty cramped (historic city etc).
They also tend to be around shopping centres..

I don't know what these cycle racks are called but they look like the love child between a Sheffield stand and Wheel benders (aka butterfly stands).

Just to clarify, there are also lots of bike lanes here which are just for bikes (and mopeds and motorbikes too I think) and *not* cars.
So many examples of how cycle routes are prioritised!
As a pedestrian - there's plenty of space too.

When I arrived at my hotel there was a ceremonial bike in the entrance, like it was a work of art.

Excellent.

I initially thought these routes were for bikes only that a car was wrongly going down.
Then I realised these are lanes designed for bikes, but cars can use them carefully too.
The central lanes beyond are for buses and taxis.
Transport hierarchy in action!

The gaps in the surface show you masses of subterranean bike parking just out of view.
I didn't go and count, but I'd bet 3 figure sums it's much more than Oxford's...

I was last in the Netherlands in 2019 (Amsterdam) and I've become more informed and enthused about urbanism and active travel since then (and I was already pretty keen). I'm interested to see what I spot now.

First up - there is *so much* car free space outside the central train station. 🤩

I've arrived in Groningen (Netherlands) for the European Health Psychology Society conference and I am fan-girling so much at the transport infrastructure.

Health psychology in action here!

Build it and they will bike.

It is so so SO refreshing to hear a UK farmer say simply we need to eat less meat.

This whole interview with Guy Watson-Singh is excellent.
I also completely agree we need to spend more on food and much much less on rent.

Thank you for the invitation and to the audience for the insightful questions.

I think this paper is a useful rebuttal to "once people experience XYZ from climate breakdown _then_ they'll believe and support policies."

Nope, people need to attribute XYZ to climate change. Then policy support is more likely. That association needs to get across.
