The test didn't involve the detonation of a nuclear warhead. The US tests nuclear-capable missiles not loaded with nuclear weapons pretty frequently, which is much less destructive than detonating a nuclear weapon.

Really appalling to see the Post's coverage of the announcement skip over all the various threats to human life to land on the real stakes, "relations with adversaries." I guess politics is a sterile closed room with no real consequences!!

There truly are so many reasons conducting explosive nuclear tests is a bad, dangerous, destructive escalatory idea with no real benefit to anyone!
