... metadata is never 'finished' - it requires maintenance & upkeep as standards develop. But the volume of new content that libraries acquire & therefore need to make discoverable takes up the majority of staffing resources. Especially when cataloguing teams tended to be downsized to cut costs.

Academic libraries face challenges regarding space for physical collections; they have to prioritise which items remain on open shelves, & which get relegated to stores or deaccessioned. They already use robust criteria for making these decisions; the #UKPBC will add another layer of security.

It also helps to identify parts of your data (metadata) that need attention - ie the records that need upgrading to ensure that they are not falsely flagged as unique when compared to NBK data

Being part of the #UKPBC not only secures the future of print collections via retention, it also helps libraries to understand their print collections in comparison to other institutions (benchmarking) and make informed decisions about deaccessioning

It is important to consider how you will apply retention statements into your bib records - NBK should be able to supply data on records to retain that include your internal system number (001 field) so that you can match with the data in your system.

Tidying the metadata before running the exercise in Compare helps to ensure the validity of comparison reports.
False positives for scarcity are better than false negatives, but all commitments to retain have an impact upon space and storage.
