So, no, Ohtani's power is not really captured by the numbers. Those get bigger, better, more impressive-fine. The numbers are straightforward enough. His power is better understood through something more abstract. It's the expectations he subverts. You think you understand the framework of the modern game. You think you know what is supposed to be possible here. You're familiar with all the old narratives, the places where one thing should logically follow another, and then-here is Ohtani. Here is something you did not realize you were allowed to imagine.

It’s personal ... People are getting more vulnerable in the locker room, opening up, and I think that’s when we all just opened up to each other a little more. We kind of just used that as a bonding mechanism, and it allowed us to just really buy into everyone’s story, with a lot of stuff to hold ourselves accountable on and be more vocal and take some ownership.”

Basket ball is played with deep earnestness and utter unconsciousness of self. Certain elements of false education for centuries have made woman self-conscious. She is becoming less so, but one finds women posing even in tennis and golf. It is impossible to pose in basket ball. The game is too quick, too vigorous, the action too continuous to allow any element to enter which is foreign to it. It develops quick perception and judgment—in one moment a person must judge space and time in order to run and catch the ball at the right place, must decide to whom it may best be thrown, and at the same time must remember not to "foul." It develops physical and moral courage, self-reliance and self-control, the ability to meet success and defeat with dignity.
