Emily Nussbaum has been named the new New Yorker critic for theater

It's not the Times as a whole--it's most definitely the theater editor there who's to blame for sanding away the critics' originality. If you've ever read anything by the editor there in print, you can tell she's not much of a writer herself and only came to this job during COVID

It's also a stretch for the judges to praise BS's "distinctive voice" when she's written just 5 minor pieces for the Times the past year and when she lazily began one review with a passage generated by ChatGPT: www.broadwaynews.com/the-broadway... There are more deserving veteran critics at the NYT!

no specific reviews for BroadwayNews were cited, but her pieces are partly aggregations of quotes from other reviews and are consumer-guide reports, not criticism. Was there truly no other worthy candidate? Stefka Mihaylova's "Viewers in Distress" should have at least been co-honored.

3Views is good & deserves its Obie, but it's surprising that the committee singled out a review of only 600 words for this year's winning entry...all of BS' infrequent reviews for the Times are minimum length; her BroadwayNews reviews are literally comprised largely of rehashes of other reviews
