A parliament of textures (mostly diaspora, displacement, painting, being witchy, being a witchy mom to a toddler, being a recovering academic with a PhD in German literature).
Congratulations! Can't wait to read it.

At my first and last tenure track job at a school in which my program was ultimately discontinued, a department colleague, who had taught for 15 years, told me the English faculty at the college wouldn't allow him to teach Japanese lit. He had a PhD in comp lit and taught in the Japanese department.

Anyways, with more socio-economically homogenous PhD cohorts, the profession--as far as it continues to exist--will become, even more than it already is, a domain of the independently wealthy.

I was able to graduate with a double major. then I went on to get an MA as well (while working FT). I had fantastic professors. And I got into UC Berkeley for my PhD. And when I got into UC Berkeley, I really had no idea that the majority of my colleagues came from well-to-do backgrounds.

We came to the US as refugees in the same year I was slated to start college. A mere month before the start of the semester, in fact. Tell me how I was supposed to access any other school? I had no scores from SATs or other some such. We were not wealthy expats. I worked at Wendy's to cover tuition.
