I am in Istanbul for #IHSA2025 #IHSAConference2025 and to meet folks working in and interested in Turkish and Syrian humanitarian networks. If you’re in town, reach out.

A crucial detail: “not run by the United Nations.”

This is no accident. UNRWA and the #UnitedNations have been the subject of valid criticisms, but also politically-motivated criticisms in #Gaza.

The latter were meant to delegitimize the organization, and justify stopping their work. 🧵

Paris air is clean. It is noticeable enough to make you stop and take deep breaths. The streets are safe for people. It’s now a city for human beings (and some bicycles), not 🚗.

What do we care about? @aljazeera.com top story is the depletion of UN food stores in Gaza. The BBC has a head teacher attacking another teacher b/c of a love triangle and M&S halting online sales up first.

Leader of the #WhiteHelmets, Raed Al-Saleh, stepped down to join the Syrian Government.

Whether some or all of the Syrian civil defense force will also join the government remains to be seen. Despite past clashes with HTS, the question is likely not ‘will they join?’ but when, and in what form.🧵

This is the—uncharacteristic—front page of the CBC. As V-Dem warns the US may lose democratic status, Canadian nationalism and militarism grows. Leaders across the political spectrum are calling for significant investment in military assets, and prioritizing economic and defence spending. #cdnpoli

The LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) in my parents’ town has now filled shelves that once held American products with Ontario alternatives. Canadian flags have never been so popular in Franco-Ontario! #tariffs 🇨🇦 #FortheGoodofCanada

I’m back home in Canada for a few days. In case you wondered how people are feeling up here, this captures the general sentiment pretty well 🇨🇦 #cdnpoli #tariffs

Wars in two countries under occupation. One population is offered an open path to protection. The other is not.

Today’s PMQs fail to address the root of the problem.

To my American friends, keep fighting.

On this day 8 years ago we marched. And in the days and months and years that followed individuals and groups like the @aclu.org and @ppfa.bsky.social fought to protect people of colour, women, migrants, and minorities. Remember that some of those fights were won, and they really mattered.

I think about donor power in The Politics of Development incl. Qs about whose interests and ideas matter, big donor influence, philanthrocapitalism, local and diaspora donors, and the possibility of reparations through aid.
