I recently realized that I am still carrying some crap from an abusive relationship from my youth. I drew this. I haven't completely thrown off the crap, but I am getting myself free.

Hey all,

I haven't been posting my one good thing lately b/c we had to put down our sweet greyhound Tivo on Friday. The kids are taking it especially hard. I'll get back to my regularly scheduled good things, but I needed a little break.

Give love to your furry friends for me.

Yesterday's #OneGoodThing:

When I was a kid, I thought a Poetic License was a real thing you could apply for and carry in your wallet. For Mother's Day, my kid made me this soon-to-be laminated Poetic License that I will happily carry in my wallet.

Today's #OneGoodThing:

10yo told me The Dude is the smartest cat in the world. Apparently, Dude understands 5 languages: Hebrew, Japanese, French, Spanish, and Catari, which is apparently a cat language. (You'll notice he doesn't understand English...)

In this week's Deep Thoughts, I analyze Trading Places, my early childhood gateway to money nerdery. Tracie and I also tell the story of how Jamie Lee Curtis happened to be at my wedding. (Really!)

Have some frozen concentrated orange juice and listen!

13yo liked Good Omens and LOVED Sherlock. I LOVED Hazbin Hotel, liked The Flash, and was seriously traumatized by Invincible. We have to plan another sharing day to get through the rest of our list.

Breakfast Club passes the Bechdel test & explicitly names the prude/slut trap of female sexuality, but also treats girls like prizes & assures us we’re not so different–w/ an all white, cishet, able-bodied cast.

Sounds like your earbuds and my earbuds should get together and listen.

Today's #OneGoodThing:

13 has been asking me to read The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas for weeks. I sat down to read it today. Actually, I unhinged my jaw and swallowed it whole. Go get this wonderfully odd and funny and poignant and gorgeous YA novel.

From erasure of Black culture & ambition to some truly weird sexual politics, Tracie and I talk about all the ways this weird, regressive, fun, remarkably well-made movie reifies social hierarchies & celebrates bizarre friendships btwn high school kids and ageless mad scientists.

Whoever said that art is supposed to spring, fully-formed and devoid of influence, from the creator's mind?

Not Richard O'Brien, the genius who wore his influences on his sleeve while creating one of the most iconic, beloved, and influential movies of the 20th century, Rocky Horror Picture Show.

On this Deep Thoughts episode, we talk about Clueless: from lovely teen girl friendships to casual homophobia to the lesson that unwanted male attention is the price of being female.

How I know I'm a money writer:

I was giddy when I came across the office of one of my go-to sources in Kansas City. It felt like meeting a celebrity!

(I did the same thing last year when I took a selfie in front of the BLS in DC.)

And what have we learned today, class?

"That the muffin tin truly is an integral part of baking cupcakes."

And what else?

"That we need to look more than two places for the muffin tin before giving up and winging it with a cookie sheet."
