So all this is to say:

When you’re managing a team or collaborating, aim to be mindful of expectations everyone’s been given (and the ones you’ve handed out). Be mindful of everyone’s agency and autonomy to succeed and learn. Mistakes and growth need to happen. And my therapist was right 😂

Unfortunately I don’t know if I can talk to this person about it? (But sure, Bluesky, you can have it!)

I get that intent ≠ impact is part of this (that person was not trying to break me down), and while the gesture to help was thoughtful …. There was an expectation given to me, then taken away without my consent, and it left me feeling overmanaged and helpless. Just this big 🤏

This week, someone tried to do something nice for me and it really wasn’t at all. I won’t get into details bc #vague: but it was a task I was given and needed to do, but it was repeatedly taken away & micromanaged to be “helpful.” I couldn’t succeed. I had no agency. You know the feeling.

I think … I think she’s right? Lemme elaborate with a good old fashioned vaguebook.

Let’s say you are doing a task (or something) for someone. Then, without your consent or knowledge, that person (or someone else) suddenly completes or take away the task with minimal or no communication.

My therapist says that can take away agency & create a feeling of helplessness or emptiness.
