Berries of black bryony, the young shoots of which are a local delicacy steamed with a nice vinaigrette.
Known as ‘herbe aux femmes battues’ because the root is used to treat bruises.
The berries are highly toxic but pretty at Christmas nevertheless.

If you time it right and have also developed a nice open soil structure, by adding lots of organic matter over the years, your Oyas should pull straight out of the soil for winter storage without having to dig. Most satisfying.

It’s best to start the cold season with healthy kale and chard plants, since growth slows to a standstill.
Plastic tunnels would provide shelter, I don’t want them because of sustainability issues and microplastics.
If soil temperature is more important than air temp, would a thick mulch help?
